We are a tad besotted with the South Coast Region. We are often asked about suggestions for a to do list from first time visitors to our beautiful town. So whether you are travelling as a family, couple, with friends, wine lovers or nature lovers, Denmark has something to offer everyone.
Denmark Town Centre – Art – Antiques – Books - Designer Shops – Gifts - Cafes - Coffee
The town of Denmark is nestled by the Denmark River with parkland on the town side which provides visitors with a scenic picnic area, BBQs, a playground, open space and big beautiful trees. With canoe and bike hire available from the Denmark Visitor centre, paddling, riding or walking makes for a pleasurable outing by the river. Plenty of parking is available.
As part of my research for this blog, I spent a wonderful afternoon, visiting local businesses to meet owners, managers and staff and take photos of their beautiful stores. Thank you to each and everyone. Oh and, of course, coffee with friends. After reflecting on my excursion I realised how much pride is taken by each business, the exteriors are visually appealing, each of the window displays creates a sense of excitement to enter and discover more. I found some wonderful surprises and it was just as well the credit card was left at home. I am quite convinced you could enjoy a good three to four hours or more in town. You could start your day with breakfast at one of the many cafes, morning tea, lunch then afternoon tea, and spend a leisurely day slowly wandering through the town of Denmark.
Denmark has a wide array of cafes, art galleries, designer shops, a fabulous antiques store and also two supermarkets, organic produce stores and amenities which you may require.
The Gallery Walk comprises of four art galleries within the town centre.
1) The Butter Factory Studios 10/12 Mt Shadforth Road.
The Butter Factory Studios is home to eight artists working in a variety of media. As well as being an open workspace and gallery, the studio hosts life drawing sessions, workshops and exhibitions by guest artists. There is always something new to explore at Butter Factory Studios.
Located on the ground floor of the restored Old Butter Factory, a character-filled building in central Denmark which also houses Mrs Jones cafe.
Open Wed-Mon 10am-4pm
2) Riverfront Gallery 8A Horsley Road.
Right next to Teahouse Books is The Riverfront Gallery where eleven local artists using a variety of mediums display works for sale and include a variety of hand made textile works as gifts.
Open 7 days a week 10am-4pm.
3) That Gallery 18B Hollings Rd.
Opposite the beautiful Denmark River, two local artists Sandy Carter and June Smith produce beautiful artworks from florals to abstracts, and have them on display and for sale.
Open Thurs-Sun 11am-3pm.
4) Gallery 2 - Palm Court 69 Strickland St.
Local artist Michael Cartwright exhibits a collection of whimsical and traditional landscapes of the south west; both prints and originals make wonderful gifts or find pride of place in your home.
Open Mon-Sat 10am-3pm, Sun 10am-2pm.
Mt Shadforth Road.
Denmark Antiques Books & Collectables is a Tudor style building which is quintessentially in keeping with antiques. The shop is beautiful outside and within. This is one of the loveliest antique stores I have had the pleasure browsing, definitely worth a visit. You never know you may just find the perfect piece for your home!
Located at 5 Mt Shadforth Road, open 7 days a week 10am to 4pm.
Teahouse Books moved to Horsley Road a few months ago into an inviting larger space for more books and all things for book lovers, tea, coffee and homemade cakes, Chesterfields by the wood fire during the winter months. The outside seating is relaxing which very cleverly makes you want to linger longer with coffee or tea in your hand surrounded by books. If you are a book lover or have family or friends who are, then you will find a gift for one and all. Teahouse Books hold regular events and often have live music to add to the wonderful ambience.
Walking south along Hollings Road you will find Ravens Coffee Roasters who serve Raw Foods and great coffee. A fantastic corner location to sit and observe the comings and goings of people, the river and life in general.
Sasden Fashion & Interiors.
I have heard good things about one of our newest stores, but I haven't had an opportunity until now to visit. I am a very tactile person and I wanted to take everything home, I shall be returning in the near future. Sarina is an Interior Designer, her motto, "design, style, coordinate"; reflects her shop in such a beautiful way.
