Walks By Ruby, Photos by Charlotte.
Starting opposite Cotswold Street (off Ocean Beach Road), this trail takes you over Mount Hallowell and ends up at Monkey Rock. We left one car at the Monkey Rock car park and the other car parked on Ocean Beach Road.
It was quite a treacherous walk overall starting about 30 minutes into the walk there are some steep rocky parts, but when you get to about 45 minutes in there is a lovely picnic stop on a granite rock.
The track winds through a beautiful Karri and Sheoak forest. With plenty of granite outcrops dotted along the way. About 45 minutes from the first lot of boulders there are some of the biggest granite rocks hidden amongst the trees. There is also a cave along the way which is very spectacular.
Another 45 minutes and you have reached the summit, AKA Alex's Rock, where you will have the best view of the area, from the South Coast all the way around to Mount Lindesay. On a fine day you can even see as far as the Stirling Ranges. From there the track goes down and back up quite a bit, and it really tested our fitness. Then you reach a junction where the sign has fallen over but still points the right way. To your right is Mt Hallowell which is a short walk to a nice view over the South side of the hill. If you go straight ahead at the junction you will go down quite a steep track for a while that twists and turns all the way to Monkey Rock which has beautiful panoramic views of Ocean Beach all the way around to William Bay. After you've finished taking in the fantastic view its just a 15 minute walk down hill to the Monkey Rock car park, situated on Lights Road.
